Florida Street Project Approved by County Board

At its meeting on July 19, the Arlington County Board approved this year's round of traffic calming projects, which included one project in the Yorktown neighborhood.

On June 9, the Arlington County Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committe approved the installation of speed humps and other improvements on North Florida Street.

Residents along this busy section of Florida Street secured the necessary 60% approval of affected residents to comply with the primary requirement to move forward with the traffic calming project on that street. In fact, 83% of affected residents signed off on the project!

Neighbors had earlier established a formal task force to secure funding under the county�s Traffic Calming program for speed bumps and other improvements intended to reduce traffic speeds on the street.

The target area for this project, which runs from the intersection of N. Florida and George Mason (at the 7-eleven) north to the intersection of N. Florida and 26th Street North, includes about 100 households. Those were the households that were asked to sign the petitions indicating support or opposition to the project. May 16 was the petition deadline.

While program rules require that projects be initiated and approved by affected homeowners, projects receive extra points during the review process if they are supported by the neighborhood civic association.

Therefore, the Yorktown Civic Association Executive Committee adopted a resolution of support for this project at its monthly meeting on April 21. A similar resolution in support of the project was adopted by the full membership at the spring meeting on April 30.

Interested neighbors also attended an open house on the proposed project on Wednesday, April 23, at Yorktown High School. County staff and members of the county-wide Neighborhood Traffic Calming Commission attended that meeting to answer questions about the program and this project.
